Boaters asked to keep eye out for Southern Right whale calf

Recreational and commercial boat skippers have been asked to take extra care on the water this week with a sighting of a rare Southern Right whale calf off the coast of Byron Bay in Cape Byron Marine Park.

The Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water's Geoff Ross said Southern Right whale calves were not often seen in these waters.

However he said the Southern Right whale calves were known to travel close to shore, keeping near their mothers, as they made their way to the southern oceans to feed during the summer.

“This calf was seen with its mother and we'd love to ensure its safe journey to the Antarctic,” said Mr Ross.
