France set new SailGP speed record on wild opening day in Sassnitz

On August 22, 2026, the ROCKWOOL Germany Sail Grand Prix kicked off in Sassnitz, with intense competition among the top teams. The event saw six races with five different winners, but the highlight was the new speed record set by DS Automobiles Team France, achieving a top speed of 107.63 km/h. This surpassed the previous record of 103.93 km/h set by Denmark’s ROCKWOOL Racing at the same location last year.

In the final race, France claimed victory in front of a passionate sold-out crowd, with driver Quetin Delapierre noting the intensity of the final bear-away as a crucial moment for breaking the record. ROCKWOOL Racing also pushed their limits, reaching 106.79 km/h before losing control due to a nosedive. Other notable performances included Los Gallos of Spain clocking 106.55 km/h.

The competition was fierce among the 13 teams, divided into two groups. Australia led Group B into the second day with 10 points, while New Zealand topped Group A with 12 points. The fleets raced in challenging conditions, utilising the smallest 18-meter wings and high-speed foil configurations.

The opening race saw Australia take the lead, followed by a strong performance from the Black Foils in Group A, with Peter Burling leading his team to victory in their opener. The Australians continued their momentum, winning their second race with a commanding lead.

In a thrilling conclusion, France maintained their position at the front in race 4, while Germany celebrated a win in race 5, energising the home crowd. Ultimately, the day culminated in DS Automobiles Team France’s record-breaking speed, elevating the excitement for the ongoing SailGP series.

The ROCKWOOL Germany Sail Grand Prix continues with more qualifying races and a Grand Final scheduled for August 23, 2026.
