Bonds Flying Roos stretch championship lead with fifth win of 2026 season

Tom Slingsby’s Bonds Flying Roos secured a remarkable win on the Baltic Sea, marking their fifth victory of the 2026 SailGP season. The team sailed a flawless Final, finishing ahead of NorthStar in second and Los Gallos in third, further extending their lead in the championship standings.

The event attracted nearly 15,000 fans. Slingsby’s crew faced strong competition, including Olympic champions Giles Scott, Diego Botín, and Peter Burling, but ultimately emerged victorious in a thrilling final decided by mere meters.

The weather conditions on championship Sunday contrasted sharply with the previous day, featuring heavy rain and gusty breezes of up to 40 km/h. The home team capitalised on the shifting conditions, executing a strategic race to finish 600 meters ahead of their rivals in race four.

In a noteworthy performance, New Zealand’s team made their first final appearance of the season but finished fourth after a penalty just before the finish line hindered their chances. Meanwhile, Sweden’s Artemis Racing improved their overall standings after a strong showing in Sassnitz.

The final race was marked by challenging conditions. Slingsby’s team made a strong start, rounding the first mark ahead of their competitors. Despite a late surge from Botín’s crew, the Bonds Flying Roos maintained their lead, finishing with a comfortable margin.

Reflecting on the race, Slingsby noted the importance of adapting to the conditions and drawing lessons from earlier races in the series. “We had to work for it, but that final just came out firing,” he stated.

The competition continues to heat up with just four events remaining in the championship. The next SailGP event will take place in Valencia, Spain, on September 5-6, 2026, where fans can expect more thrilling races as teams vie for the championship title.
