Colin Jack-Hinton Maritime Gallery in Darwin – reinterpreted and revitalised

The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is the Northern Territory in Australia’s premier cultural institution.

The revitalised Colin Jack-Hinton Maritime Gallery in Darwin has recently reopened to the public.

Visitors can see an immersive display of 23 vessels, collected over a 40 year period (c.1970–2010), from South East Asia, Polynesia and northern Australia.

An extensive range of canoes, boats and objects allow visitors to discover how maritime technology and history has evolved in the region. Landlubbers and seadogs alike can see what life was like aboard these traditional vessels, accompanied by fascinating re-interpretations about pearling luggers, fish-traders and war canoes.

The Gallery now offers a more enriching experience for local and international visitors to Darwin. This in turn contributes to increased tourism numbers to the Northern Territory throughout the year.
