Currently, Club Marine, skippered by Emma Rankin with Cameron Walker on the sheet and Daniel Watson in the bow, leads the point tally, followed closely by Killer Coffee Co. and Lazarus Capital Partners. Emma’s team has a narrow four-point advantage, while both Lazarus Capital Partners and The Kitchen Maker are tied for third, just one point behind.
Race 5 will take place over a 3-buoy course, with club handicap adjustments based on each team’s previous race performances. The pressure is high for the leading team, as they face experienced competitors eager to seize the championship.
Emma Rankin, a tenacious competitor, has proven her capabilities after transitioning into the 18s fleet in 2023-24. With guidance from former world champion Michael Spies and a solid crew, she nearly clinched a race victory at the recent Giltinan World Championship.
Club Marine’s backing has yielded success, making Emma the first female skipper to win a race in the 115-year history of the Australian Championship. She has also made history in the NSW Championship, demonstrating her increasing prowess in the sport.
As the series progresses, Emma acknowledges the challenges of leading with a heavier crew combination. The Killer Coffee Co. team, in their first season together, is led by Ryan Ewings, who is also new to skiff racing, yet their previous experiences suggest they are highly competitive.
Other teams, including Vaikobi, Yandoo, and Smeg, remain in contention, with the possibility of a surprise outcome as the championship nears its conclusion.
