Yacht sinks after catching fire south of Noosa

A yacht, believed to have been travelling from the Gold Coast to Tin Can Bay on Friday, caught fire off Marcus Beach, just south of Noosa Heads.

There was one man on board and he abandoned ship in his tender and was picked up by another yacht which was in the area.

Water police senior constable Niall Appleyard said reports came in from Noosa surf lifesavers of a vessel on fire 10km off the beach. He told the Sunshine Coast Daily that the man was transferred to a Coast Guard boat and brought back to shore.

“There was only one male on board at the time of the fire and he is safe and well. We don't know the name of the yacht or its registration at this point and we are unsure how the fire occurred.”

He said Maritime Safety Queensland had been informed of the incident. “The vessel has flipped, which may potentially be an issue later in terms of spilled fuel.”
