For the first time in over five years, three J Class yachts will compete head-to-head from their own class start at the upcoming Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. This autumn showcase will feature Hanuman joining Svea and Rainbow, who recently displayed strong performances at the Superyacht Cup Palma Richard Mille in Majorca earlier this summer.
Hanuman will race for the first time under new Italian owner Giovanni Lombardi Stronati, marking a significant return to Europe after more than a decade. In 2014, Hanuman finished second at Les Voiles behind Velsheda. Svea, now under Swedish ownership since 2022, is also set to make her debut at this regatta.
Excitement has been building around this trio, with more than 250 yachts expected to participate in the event. The J Class yachts will take centre stage, showcasing their elegance among a fleet that includes numerous historic classics.
The experienced crew of Hanuman, led by Vasco Vascotto, is eager to learn and adapt on the Endeavour II replica, having recently excelled in the Maxi class at this globally renowned event on Stronati’s maxi Django 7X. Vascotto expressed enthusiasm for the challenge ahead, acknowledging the team’s focus on enjoying the experience while aiming for improvement in future competitions.
With three yachts competing, the dynamics of racing will shift from match racing to more open competition, providing thrilling opportunities for both crews and spectators alike. Svea’s navigator, Steve Hayles, anticipates exciting interactions between the three skilled teams, highlighting the significance of teamwork and preparation.
Rainbow, under the guidance of America’s Cup tactician Ed Baird, aims to build on their learnings from Palma, adjusting their strategies and improving their performance. Baird noted that while facing off against Svea will be challenging, the introduction of a third boat will create engaging racing conditions that captivate both participants and viewers.
The J Class races are scheduled from Monday 28th September to Saturday 3rd October, with an official lay day on Wednesday 30th September. This long-awaited event promises to bring together the best of sailing, showcasing the regal J Class yachts in a captivating setting.
