Porto Cervo, 2 June 2026. The Range Rover Sardinia Cup commenced with 20 boats starting at 11 a.m. The historic regatta, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, returns after a 14-year hiatus. This year’s event features a new club-team format where each of the ten competing yacht clubs fields two boats, one in each of the Sardinia Cup Class 1 (SC1) and Class 2 (SC2). The overall standings are determined by the lowest combined points from both entries.
Today’s first coastal race covered approximately 30 miles for SC1 and 22.5 miles for SC2. The Race Committee’s course took competitors through the La Maddalena channel, rounding the island of Spargi before returning to Porto Cervo. The SC1 boats sailed upwind towards the Passo delle Bisce, with most choosing the left side of the course, while SC2 boats sought clean air in the centre. The light Mistral winds built to 14 knots, providing excellent racing conditions.
Victory in SC1 was claimed by James Neville’s TP 52 Ino Veritas, representing the RORC. Following closely were the wallyrocket51 Django WR owned by Giovanni Lombardi Stronati and the IRC 52 Jolt 3, which faced a time penalty dropping it to fourth. In SC2, Niklas Zennstroem’s IRC 41 Ran won for the RORC Gold team, finishing narrowly ahead of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s Django JP. The third position went to the Estonian Carkeek 40 MK2 GP Nola.
The provisional team standings feature the Royal Ocean Racing Club and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda tied for first, with the RORC Gold team in third.
Tomorrow, a long-distance race of approximately 130 miles is set to start at 3 p.m. with strong Mistral winds expected. The course will take competitors along the eastern coast of Sardinia, rounding multiple waypoints before returning to Porto Cervo. A Crew Party will be held this evening on the YCCS terrace, hosted by RocketNikka’s owner, Roberto Lacorte, in collaboration with Pharmanutra and Cetilar.
