The Island Echo

Bembridge RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat launched to assist two yachts which had collided close to Horse Tail Channel buoy at lunchtime (Thursday).

The Tamar-class ‘Alfred Albert Williams’ was launched at 12:15 at the request of Solent Coastguard to assist the yachts – one 38ft and the other 30ft.

Conditions were benign so the lifeboat and her crew only took 5 minutes to reach the casualty vessels.

Having ascertained that none of the crew were injured, two lifeboat crewman were transferred to the smaller of the two yachts, which had a broken mast, to help make her safe.

Once this was done, the larger of the two yachts headed to Gosport Marina to be checked over and the dismasted yacht made her way under her own power to Chichester.

The Alfred Albert Williams returned to Bembridge and was recovered by 13:30.
