The Organising Authority for the legendary offshore catamaran race has officially released the Notice of Race (NOR) and finalised the dates for its highly anticipated return, scheduling the grueling 1,000-mile coastal gauntlet for May 7–20, 2028. Sailors and fans can download the official NOR document directly at worrell1000race.com.
The announcement has triggered a massive wave of enthusiasm across the global sailing community. Since the leadership team broke their silence on July 11th, the Worrell 1000 Facebook page has exploded with over 42,000 views, proving that the appetite for this historic, 51-year-old race is stronger than ever. In response to this overwhelming digital response and a flood of formal “intent to return” emails sent to the Principal Race Officer (PRO) from past Worrell teams, organisers have officially raised the team registration cap from 15 to 20 boats.
Registration will open in May 2027, giving teams a one-year runway to build their offshore campaigns. “The energy since our July 11th announcement has been absolutely electric,” said Beverley Simmons, Media Director. “To pull in 42,000 views in just a couple of weeks proves how deeply people care about this event. Because our fans, friends, and the Worrell family are the lifeblood of this race, we are throwing the doors wide open to include them in the journey over the next 22 months.”
As part of this community-first mission, organisers are launching interactive initiatives leading up to the May 2028 starting line. The Fan-Voted Regatta T-Shirt: In an unprecedented move, the Organising Authority will present three distinct, limited-edition designs to the online community. The fans will hold the voting power to decide the official t-shirt worn by competitors and staff, and these shirts will also be made available for sale to the public. The race will heavily utilise live-streaming, interactive Q&As, and archival historical spotlights to keep its 6.2k and growing follower base embedded in the race committee’s preparations.
