Starting Day 2 in fifth place overall, Nossiter made a remarkable comeback, winning Races 4 and 5 while finishing fifth in Race 6. The competition format allowed for a drop of the worst result after six races, which benefited Nossiter as he was able to discard a ninth place from the previous day.
Representing the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, Nossiter faced tight finishes throughout the day. “I had an early night last night so I could come back and smash the younger blokes,” he remarked with a laugh.
Reflecting on his performance, Nossiter acknowledged some rustiness but expressed gratitude for his victory. “Sailing the boat through the water should be automatic for me, but I was a bit rusty… I was fortunate to win.”
The conditions on Pittwater were challenging, with light and shifty winds primarily from the north-west. Nossiter noted that the lack of wind during Race 3 led to significant congestion, necessitating a restart by the Race Committee.
Unfortunately, Nossiter is unable to participate in the upcoming Finn Australians as he has committed to serving as the driver for the rescue/chase boat at SailGP in Perth. Prior to that, he will leverage his sailing expertise on the super maxi LOYAL during the Rolex Sydney Hobart.
McKillop, who entered Day 2 just three points behind Nossiter, improved his standing with a series of strong finishes, including a win in the final race. “The first two races were tricky today. It’s always tough sailing at Pittwater in a nor’ wester,” he commented.
Despite a disappointing prior race where he misjudged a mark, McKillop expressed satisfaction with his overall performance, indicating his ongoing commitment to improve.
Lewis Davies, yesterday’s leader, concluded the championship in third place overall. His inconsistent performance of 6-4-6 contrasted sharply with his strong Day 1 results, underscoring the competitive nature of the fleet. McKillop praised Davies for his rapid improvement in the class.
Sam Ede finished seventh overall, winning the Under 30 title, while his father, Tim, placed 11th. The day also featured an intense race between Nossiter and Marcus Whitley, with Nossiter narrowly winning Race 4 by just 17 seconds.
Races 5 and 6 saw further close finishes, with McKillop narrowly defeating Nossiter in Race 5 by just one second. The championship concluded with three additional windward/leeward races, which were contested under challenging north-westerly conditions.
The Finn NSW Championship, organised by RPAYC in conjunction with the NSW Finn Class Association, saw participation from nineteen boats representing NSW, Victoria, and Queensland, with many competitors preparing for the upcoming Finn Australian Championship in February.
