Successful second day for leaders at Copa del Rey MAPFRE

Today the fleet of the 33 Copa del Rey MAPFRE completed the two windward / leeward races scheduled for all classes. The wind arrived late in the central race course of the bay, where the Gaastra IRC 0, Barclays 52 Super Series and Gazprom Swan 60 were sailing, and as a result had to wait about an hour until wind conditions were favourable for a fair race .

After the second day of competition and with four races sailed in all classes, two new teams take the lead provisionally – “Red Eléctrica Española” in Nespresso X-35 class and “Bronenosec” in the Gazprom Swan 60 class.   Six other  teams successfully defend their positions at the head of the classification – “Shockwave” in Gaastra IRC 0, “Hurakan” in Gaastra IRC 1, “Quantum Racing” in Barclays 52 Super Series, “Rats on Fire” in BMW ORC 1, “Movistar” in BMW ORC 2 and “Herbalife” in Herbalife J80.

The fleet faces the third day of competition tomorrow, and the midpoint of the 33rd Copa del Rey MAPFRE. At the end of the day the “Enlace” trophies will be awarded for the leaders of each category at the halfway point in the regatta.

Gaastra IRC 0
The undeniable star of the day in the class Gaastra IRC 0 was Roberto Tomasini’s “Robertissima III”, who docked out this morning in the last position of the scoring board but won both races later in the day. He is up to second place, three points behind the leader Georges Sakellaris’ “Shockwave” (2-2). In third place is Andres Soriano’s “Alegre” (4-3).

Gaastra IRC 1
Giuseppe Parodi’s Italian “Hurakan” had the best results of the day in the Gaastra IRC 1 class, with a first and a second place which allows him to maintain the lead and extend it over the rest of the fleet. “Team Vision Future” won the second race, snatching the provisional second place overall from  “@robas” (4-5 today), now third.

Gazprom Swan 60
The defender of the Gazprom Swan 60 world champion title is the new leader of the class. Russian Vladimir Liubomirov’s “Bronenosec” scored today a third and a first, and combined with the modest results of the first day’s winner, “Tsaar Peter” (5-7), “Bronenosec” has climbed to first place. Dimitry Samokin’s “Petit Flamme” was the best of the day with a first and a second place, and takes second place overall.

Barclays 52 Super Series
In the Barclays 52 Series class there are already four teams with a victory, as many as races sailed. Today, victories went to Tony Langley’s British “Gladiator” in the first race, and to Alberto Roemmers’ Italian “Azzurra” in the second. The leadership overall is still in the hands of U.S. Ed Baird’s “Quantum Racing”, who finished second in both races today.

BMW ORC 1
Last year’s champion in the class BMW ORC 1, “Rats On Fire” skippered by Manuel Doreste, maintain their lead from yesterday after an irregular day: he started winning the first race but was seventh in the next, won by Natalia Brailoiu’s “Natalia”. The Romanian boat is ninth due to a disqualification suffered yesterday; which she will be able to discard after having sailed eight races. British “Magical Mystery Tour” (3-3) climbs up to second place, and third is German “Earlybird”.

BMW ORC 2
Enrique Terol’s “Movistar” also defends its lead in the class BMW ORC 2. The boat skippered by Pedro Campos achieved his third consecutive victory on the first race of the day, but he was over the line in the next one, forcing the crew to perform a titanic effort to finish fourth. This second race ended with a tie between Teo Matheu’s “Airlan Aermec” and Lluis Blanchar’s “Varador 2000”, who finished with identical times after the time compensation was applied, getting 1.5 points each. Both are behind “Movistar” in the overall classification after four races.

Nespresso X-35
Javier Sanz’s “Red Eléctrica de España” was the protagonist of the day in the class Nespresso X-35. The boat from the RCNP, left his yacht club this morning in seventh position overall, but returned leader after finishing first and second in the two races held today. Finnish Teemu Kekkonen’s “Audi e-tron” won the second race of the day. Italian “Legalain” is still in second place, after finishing second and a seventh today, followed now by yesterday’s leader, “Puerto Deportivo Benalmádena ” (6-4). The top four in the overall classifications are all within two points.

Herbalife J80
Javier Padrón’s “Herbalife” defended his lead with a great day in which he scored a third and a second place. The first race of the day went to Pichu Torcida’s “Noticia”. The two contenders for the title, “Factor Energía” and “Movistar” got a black flag picking up 17 points, but “Movistar” reacted by winning the following race. The provisional podium after four races is made of “Herbalife”, “Noticia” and the defending champions, Hugo Rocha’s “New Territories”.

The social program continues
After the competition on the water finished, it was the turn of the social program. Today’s highlight was the traditional Crew Party, at which funky music was the star thanks to the collaboration of Pachá and the performance of Eazy Mickael and Toni Rios.

The competition will continue tomorrow, with a coastal race scheduled for the Gaastra IRC 0, Gazprom Swan 60 and Barclays 52 Super Series classes. The rest of the classes have two more windward-leeward races scheduled. Racing will start at 13h00.

The 33rd Copa del Rey MAPFRE is organized by the Real Club Náutico de Palma and will finish on the 9th.
