Episode 2 of SailGP’s *Racing on the Edge* showcases two athletes who thrive on the edge of competitive sailing, exploring the critical decisions that influence the most thrilling races on water.
Set against the backdrop of the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Auckland, the episode investigates the delicate balance between risk and reward that each team must navigate. Kiwi Phil Robertson, skipper of the Red Bull Italy SailGP Team, reflects on his challenging upbringing and the relentless drive that shaped his career. He notes, “How do you win on a day like today? It’s risk versus reward. You take the start like it’s a separate part of the race and ask yourself: how much are you willing to risk to be P1 at mark 1?”
In contrast, Tash Bryant, strategist for the Bonds Flying Roos, views risk as something to be managed. Her role is crucial in ensuring the team sails at maximum speed without the worry of crashing. She describes her aim as letting the team focus on performance, even in extreme conditions.
The episode also highlights the consequences of miscalculation on the water, illustrated by a collision between the Black Foils from New Zealand and the DS Automobiles SailGP Team France. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks in competitive sailing. Pete Burling, driver for Black Foils, recounts the moment, stating, “It very much felt like for a second we were passengers on a boat going sideways. We were just hoping that the boats behind us managed to give us a wide enough berth.”
Robertson articulates the collective understanding among competitors regarding the risks they face: “When we step on these boats the risk is there. We all know what can go wrong out there and it’s something you have to accept as a competitor in this league.”
As the fleet enters the second day of racing, the question remains: which team will successfully find the balance between risk and reward? The Bonds Flying Roos are keen to defend their title from Auckland in 2025. Tom Slingsby, driver of the Australian team, praises Tash’s instincts, noting her ability to seize opportunities in challenging conditions, saying, “It’s when the conditions get windier and crazier that she gets most comfortable, and that’s super rare.”
