Tønsberg, Norway – Ante Cesic and the crew of CRO 867 Razjaren have successfully defended their title at the Melges 24 European Championship. Two race wins on Day 4 secured their position with one race remaining, following their victory in the 2024 championship in Split. The confirmation of the overall champion has set the stage for keen competition among other teams for remaining podium positions and the Corinthian title.
The international Melges 24 fleet returned to the water in lighter, more stable conditions after a challenging day of heavy weather racing. Sailors and officials reviewed equipment failures from the previous day, but the consensus was that the tough conditions provided exhilarating racing experiences.
Race 7 commenced in sunny weather with a south-southwesterly breeze. Races 7 and 8 were raced over 4.2 nautical miles in approximately nine knots of wind, while Race 9 took place in slightly lighter conditions.
Razjaren’s championship was cemented with two victories in Races 7 and 8, followed by a fifth-place finish in Race 9. This scoreline of 1-1-5 resulted in an unbeatable lead, making them the Overall Boat of the Day.
“We are European Champions with one day to spare,” said Ante Cesic. “At the beginning, I told the crew that it would not be easy because there are so many strong teams here. We decided to fight for every place and every metre, and that is exactly what we have done.”
The team is set to receive the championship trophy at the prize-giving ceremony, while the battle for silver and bronze remains intense, with several teams still in contention. Paolo Brescia’s Melgina (ITA 854) currently holds second place with 36 points, while Vladimir Prosikhin’s Nika (MON 860) moved into third with 44 points after consistent performances.
In the Corinthian division, Helly Hansen II Lisa (NOR 697) by Kristoffer Spone has emerged as a strong contender, recovering from a difficult start to take the Corinthian Boat of the Day title with two race victories.
With only one race remaining in the championship, the competition is fierce as teams vie for the coveted Corinthian European Championship title. The final race is anticipated to be a thrilling conclusion to this prestigious event, with all eyes on Tønsberg Sailing Club for the crowning of champions.
