The DMG MORI GLOBAL ONE was unveiled on June 5th, 2026, in Lorient, France, marking a significant milestone in its design and construction journey that spanned two years. Skipper Kojiro Shiraishi led the presentation, highlighting that this would be his final boat, and expressed a desire to make it special with the help of a talented team.
The design represents a significant departure from existing IMOCA fleet characteristics, featuring a hull form akin to the central hull of a trimaran. This innovative design aims to enhance the boat’s foiling capabilities, reduce slamming against waves, and lower drag.
Guillaume Verdier, the lead designer, noted the risks involved with such a radical design but remained optimistic. The team has rethought traditional boat shapes, focusing on maintaining an upright position while sailing, which differs from the conventional heeling method. This approach integrates the hull, foil, aerodynamics, and rudder into a cohesive design aimed at improving sailor comfort and performance.
Verdier’s insights suggest that sailors may experience a more pleasant ride, akin to sailing on a multihull, which is anticipated to alleviate some discomfort experienced with previous boat designs. The goal is to create a vessel that can foil earlier and more efficiently.
With the boat nearing its launch, team manager Jacques Caraës emphasized the excitement surrounding the unveiling, describing it as akin to unwrapping a new present. He mentioned that further finishing work would be carried out at the team base in Lorient before preparing for The Ocean Race Atlantic in September 2026.
Experienced sailor Sam Davies, who will join Kojiro for the Atlantic race, expressed eagerness to learn the new sailing dynamics and highlighted the hull’s design advantages, which promise to reduce slamming and facilitate earlier foiling compared to existing models.
The DMG MORI GLOBAL ONE is expected to make its water debut soon, as the team prepares for competitive racing ahead of the round-the-world race scheduled for January 2027.
