Since making his escape two days ago, French skipper Corentin Horeau (MACSF) has built a significant lead in the 2026 Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe, leading the 21-boat IMOCA fleet across the Atlantic. Horeau outsmarted class leaders Ambrogio Beccaria (Allagrande Mapei) and Sam Goodchild (MACIF Santé Prévoyance) and currently holds a lead of over 185 miles with approximately 2100 nautical miles remaining to Pointe-à-Pitre.
While German sailor Boris Herrmann (Malizia 4) and third-placed Francesca Clapcich (11th Hour Racing) have made ground on Horeau, he is maintaining a strong pace, consistently sailing at nearly 23 knots in challenging sea conditions. After emerging from the centre of a low-pressure system, Horeau remains focused on maximizing his speed as he navigates through the rough waters.
In second place, Herrmann is exhibiting a positive mindset despite the difficult conditions. He acknowledged Horeau’s speed advantage but remains hopeful about the race’s unpredictable nature. “I never say never… this race is full of surprises, and lots of things can happen,” he stated, highlighting his determination to catch up.
Sam Goodchild is also on the comeback trail after struggling in the initial stages of the race. He expressed frustration over tactical decisions that allowed Horeau to gain a lead, but he remains focused on optimizing his performance in the challenging conditions ahead. Goodchild is currently navigating through tough weather, managing both speed and the well-being of his boat.
The Class40 leaders, including Guillaume Pirouelle, are also facing significant challenges as they gybe south, preparing for strong downwind conditions that could impact their positions. Pirouelle noted the need for caution as they approach the centre of a depression expected to bring strong winds and potential damage.
As the race continues, the skippers are aware that conditions can change rapidly, emphasizing the importance of strategy and quick decision-making in this prestigious transatlantic event. With the race still far from over, each sailor remains focused on their next moves amidst the unpredictable Atlantic conditions.
