The Royal Yacht Club of Victoria (RYCV) has appointed its first female Commodore in the Club’s more than 170-year history, marking a significant milestone for one of Australia’s oldest yacht clubs.
Ms Cath Beaufort OAM was appointed Commodore at the Club’s Annual General Meeting on Saturday 19 September, becoming the first woman to hold the Club’s highest elected position since its establishment in 1853.
The appointment comes as RYCV looks towards the future while continuing to build on its proud sailing heritage and strong connection to the Williamstown and Hobsons Bay community.
“It is an incredible honour to be appointed Commodore of the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria,” said Commodore Cath Beaufort.
“RYCV has a long history, and I am proud to be part of its next chapter. The Club has always evolved with the times, and I look forward to working with our Members, volunteers and staff to continue that into the future.”
The new Commodore will lead the Club as it enters its 174th sailing season, with a focus on sailing, training, membership, participation and the Club’s role as a welcoming waterfront destination.
Founded in May 1853 as the Port Phillip Yacht Club, RYCV has played an important role in the development of sailing in Victoria for more than 170 years. Today, the Club is home to more than 1,000 members and supports sailing across a broad range of ages and abilities, from junior Tackers programs and learn-to-sail courses through to competitive keelboat and off-the-beach sailing.
The Club also continues to invest in its property and facilities, including its marina, hardstand and waterfront infrastructure, while maintaining its position as a social and community hub on the shores of Port Phillip.
RYCV General Manager Richard Black said the appointment represented an important moment in the Club’s history.
“RYCV has a proud heritage, but heritage is also about continuing to evolve. This appointment reflects the strength and diversity of our membership and the Club’s commitment to looking forward while respecting the traditions that have shaped us.”
The new Commodore has officially taken office as RYCV prepares for its 174th sailing season, with Opening Day taking place on Saturday 3 October.
