Team Australia unveils elite Australian seven-sailor team

Team Australia has unveiled its elite sailing team for the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup, set to take place in Naples, Italy, in 2027. The team, led by Olympic gold medallist Tom Slingsby, consists of seven accomplished sailors, marking their first challenge for the Cup under the Australian flag.

The roster includes Luke Parkinson, Tash Bryant, Tom Needham, Jason Waterhouse, Sam Newton, and Kinley Fowler, collectively bringing a wealth of experience from four Olympic Games and nine senior America’s Cup campaigns. This group holds an impressive tally of 24 world championship titles and 13 SailGP championship titles. Notably, Slingsby, Newton, and Fowler reunite from the victorious 2013 ORACLE TEAM USA crew.

The team recently completed a week-long simulator training block on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, where they honed their skills in crew combinations and communication systems. This preparation is crucial for the upcoming challenges in the AC75 racing format, which will also feature the inclusion of at least one female sailor in each crew for the first time in history, alongside advancements such as battery-powered systems.

Slingsby expressed pride in assembling a diverse group of sailors with proven track records and exciting emerging talent, each contributing unique strengths essential for a successful campaign. He emphasised the importance of building chemistry and instincts within the team as they progress towards the competition.

As Team Australia gears up for the Louis Vuitton Cup Challenger Selection Series in May 2027, they have also confirmed Kayo Sports and Foxtel as official broadcast partners, ensuring that fans can follow every race live. The Road to Naples promises to be an exhilarating journey for this dynamic team, representing the Royal Prince Edward Yacht Club and aiming to revive Australia’s legacy in the America’s Cup.

Founded in 1851, the America’s Cup is the oldest continuously contested trophy in international sport, symbolising the pinnacle of yacht racing.
