Fair, safe and fun racing – that’s the plan for the 2026 ILCA Oceania Solidarity Squad

The 2026 ILCA (International Laser Class Association) Oceania Solidarity Squad has gathered in Hobart for the first day of the Oceania and Australian Open and Youth Championships from 1-8 January 2026.

During a welcome session, Principal Race Officer Colin Dods outlined three key deliverables for the sailors: to ensure the racing is fair, safe, and enjoyable. Dods emphasised the importance of fostering a love of sailing and forming lifelong friendships among participants.

Australian ILCA Chairman Ken Hurling, OAM, welcomed the eight female sailors and spoke about the origins of the Solidarity Program, which started with a grant from ILCA. “Our aim was to run a program for young women, beginning our first initiative in 2023 at Georges River in New South Wales,” he stated, expressing a desire for ongoing support.

Jo and Nick Ogden, from principal sponsor Performance Sailcraft, highlighted the rich history of the ILCA dinghy and encouraged the young sailors to enjoy their time on the water while gaining valuable experience, noting they are all sailing in identical boats to promote teamwork and communication.

The members of the 2026 ILCA Oceania Solidarity Squad include Harper Spacey (NSW), Keira Dimock and Ellie Tapper (NZ), Matilda Tarring (QLD), Zahli Smith (SA), Cordelia Davey (TAS), Kate Edwards (VIC), and Seraphina Townson (WA), all supported by coach Indy Cooper and Australian Sailing.

The Solidarity initiative aims to encourage female sailors aged 13 to 16 to participate in a top-tier sailing championship, igniting their passion for the sport. Participants receive free entry to the championship, access to a charter boat, and on-water coaching.

This year’s event is hosted by the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, with racing commencing on 3 January 2026.
