Future match racing stars are set to compete for glory at the Youth Match Racing Worlds 2026 in Middelfart, Denmark, from 21-25 June. This prestigious event, powered by Bunker One, will bring together some of the best young sailors globally to race in the scenic waters of the Little Belt.
This marks the second time in three years that Middelfart serves as a hub for world-class sailing, having hosted the Youth Match Racing Worlds previously. The championship is organised by GoSail in cooperation with the Middelfart Sailing Club, Danish Sailing Federation, World Sailing, Sport Event Denmark, Middelfart Municipality, and Destination Fyn.
Bunker One will return as the title sponsor, having previously supported two World Championships in 2023—the Melges 24 World Championship and the Women’s Match Racing World Championship. Peter Zachariassen, CEO of Bunker One, expressed pride in supporting such an important event in their hometown, highlighting the significance of fostering young talent in sailing.
The Youth Match Racing Worlds will feature intense head-to-head competition, with Denmark represented by two teams from the Royal Danish Yacht Club (KDY), helmed by Mathias Rossing and Victor Melchior. Match racing is akin to a tactical duel between two boats, emphasising strategy, teamwork, and mental fortitude. This format is not only thrilling for competitors but also appealing for spectators, as it presents clear winners and losers.
Søren Mathiesen Laugesen, CEO of GoSail and Event Director, stated that the championship is a platform for identifying and nurturing future stars of the sport, with many former participants advancing to elite levels including the Olympics and America’s Cup.
The racing will unfold right in front of the newly renovated Middelfart Marina, providing exceptional views for spectators. The proximity of the racing area allows onlookers to witness the action, including pre-start tactics and crucial manoeuvres, from the shore. Mathiesen noted that match racing’s spectator-friendly nature creates an atmosphere comparable to stadium sports, making it accessible and exciting for all.
Beyond the races, the event will showcase Middelfart and the surrounding region to an international audience. The city has gained recognition as a prominent host for sailing events, thanks to its combination of excellent sailing conditions and strong community support.
Local officials, including Middelfart Municipality’s Mayor Anders Møllegård, are eager for the championship to energise the marina and draw attention to the city. The Youth Match Racing Worlds 2026 is set to enhance Middelfart’s reputation within the international sailing community.
The championship will include notable skippers such as Theo Westerlind (SWE), Daniel Kemp (AUS), and Morgan Pinckney (USA) among others. The first races commence on 22 June, culminating in the crowning of the World Champions on 25 June. All races can be viewed free of charge from the waterfront at Middelfart Marina, with favourable weather conditions expected for the event.
