With less than two months remaining until the second Preliminary Regatta (PR2) in Naples, teams are intensifying their training efforts. The regatta, scheduled for 24-27 September, will see nine boats competing, including the debut of the American Racing Challenger Team USA.
Following a sensational first regatta in Sardinia in May, where training time was limited, teams have ramped up preparations. American Racing Challenger Team USA has confirmed their one-boat entry, and team selection is currently underway. Led by CEO Ken Read and Head of Sailing Giles Scott, expectations are high for their performance.
All teams are looking to Luna Rossa‘s strong performance in Sardinia as the benchmark, while intense training camps have taken place in the lead-up to Naples. GB1, the Challenger of Record, and Athena Pathway are training in Cagliari, while Emirates Team New Zealand is focusing on their summer training block with two AC40s in Naples.
TUDOR Team Alinghi will send a senior team, and La Roche-Posay Racing Team is also preparing with their Principal Team under Quentin Delapierre. Unfortunately, Team Australia Challenge will not participate in this regatta.
As competition heats up, all teams aim for top performances in Naples, particularly Luna Rossa, who will be under pressure as the hometown favourites. Teams like Emirates Team New Zealand and GB1 are keen to establish their dominance early on.
The regatta format remains similar to Sardinia, commencing with practice racing on 24 September. Racing will begin at 14:13 CEST on 25 September, with three fleet races scheduled. The weekend will feature additional races, culminating in a final winner-takes-all showdown.
The Naples waterfront will be vibrant, with the Official Race Village open daily from 11am to 8pm, offering entertainment, team presentations, and ample viewing opportunities. If you’ve never witnessed AC40 yachts flying at speeds exceeding 40 knots, Naples promises an unforgettable experience.
In addition to the sailing excitement, Naples itself is rich in history, culinary delights, and welcoming residents, making it an ideal destination for both racing enthusiasts and tourists alike.
