Sydney Hobart in doubt owing to Northern Beaches COVID outbreak

Reports are emerging that the CYCA will be forced to cancel this year's Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race after an outbreak of COVID19 on Sydney's Northern Beaches.

There are always a good proportion of sailors from that area, especially Pittwater, in the crews. With Tasmania closing borders to anyone who has been in the Northern Beaches area recently, there may be no option but to cancel or at least defer the great race.

An unconfirmed report claims that Alive, a Tasmanian-based yacht, has already left Sydney for home, and will only turn back if the cancellation is not announced this evening.

The latest update from the CYCA reads:

0900hrs SATURDAY 19 DECEMBER 2020

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) continues to monitor all news and updates regarding recent cases of COVID-19 in Sydney’s Northern Beaches and other specified locations.

The CYCA encourages all competitors, members, guests, volunteers and staff who reside in the areas or may have visited the locations listed to follow the recommendations outlined by NSW Health and stay up to date with the NSW Government latest COVID-19 news and updates.

We will update this page and the club’s social media channels again as soon as there is any news or decisions made that impact on the 2020 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
