RNZYS to host 2027 Youth & Women’s Match Racing Worlds

World Sailing is pleased to announce that the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) in Auckland has been selected to host the 2027 World Sailing Youth Match Racing World Championship and the 2027 World Sailing Women’s Match Racing World Championship. These events will take place back-to-back in November 2027, supported by Auckland Council Events.

The 2027 World Sailing Youth Match Racing World Championship will be held from 15-20 November, followed by the Women’s Championship from 22-26 November. The iconic Waitematā Harbour provides a fitting backdrop for these prestigious events, showcasing some of the best emerging and elite talent in match racing.

This year is significant as RNZYS celebrates the 40th anniversary of its Youth Training Programme, having developed many of New Zealand’s finest sailing talents. Ferran Muniesa, World Sailing’s Director of Events, expressed excitement about the championships coming to Auckland, highlighting the importance of nurturing youth and women’s sailing pathways.

David Blakey, Commodore of RNZYS, remarked on the honour of hosting these championships, affirming the club’s reputation in international match racing and youth development. He emphasised the alignment of these events with RNZYS’s vision to inspire the next generation of sailors.

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown noted that the championships would reinforce Auckland’s reputation as a world-class sailing destination, attracting top international talent and inspiring local youth.

Ethan Fong, a graduate of the RNZYS Youth Training Programme and a top-ranked youth match racer, expressed enthusiasm for racing on home waters in front of family and friends in 2027. Megan Thomson, New Zealand’s leading female match racer, highlighted the opportunity for young female sailors to witness world-class competition at home.

Steve Armitage, Chief Executive of Yachting New Zealand, underscored the significance of hosting these championships for New Zealand’s sailing community, showcasing the country’s exceptional race management and venues.

The official Notice of Race, detailing eligibility criteria, boat specifications, entry deadlines, and event schedules, will be issued in November. National Authorities and skippers are encouraged to visit the official World Sailing event portal for more information.
