Queensland IRC State Titles & Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta kicks off this weekend

Over 20 yachts will be lined up at the start line of the Queensland IRC State Titles/Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta this Saturday 4th July, providing a great spectacle for those watching from the shore and from boats on the water.

Sunshine Coast Mayor – Mark Jamieson, will be amongst other VIPs to witness the start of the competition. The event will be organised from the Sunshine Coast Yacht Club at Parkyn Parade and the races will be run in Mooloolaba bay.

The Sunshine Coast Yacht Club is hosting IRC boats such as Black Jack Too, Corum, B52 and The Fat Controller.  Local boats, Quest and Hasta La Vista will also be testing their skills in the Qld State Titles.

The IRC Qld Titles will be combined with the SCYC’s annual event – The Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta. The original Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta ran for 20 years through the 80s and 90s. It attracted huge names within the yachting industry, such as Hugh Treharne – the tactician of Australia’s winning America’s Cup team. The reintroduction of SCOR by the Sunshine Coast Yacht Club is expected to draw more visiting yachts and their crews to the Sunshine Coast, thus providing a boost to tourism here.

Members of the public are invited to join the yacht crews at The Yacht Club on Monday the 6th July at 11.00 am for the Viking Kayak Challenge. There will be up to six kayaks available for fun races up and down between rows “A”and “B” at Mooloolaba Marina. Everyone is welcome to come and have a go or just come and watch the fun.

Enquiries regarding the racing and social events can be obtained from www.scor.net.au or by phoning 0438 979 946. Entries close at 5pm Friday 3rd July.
