The 2026 Formula Wing World Championships commenced on Tuesday, 11th August, with fierce competition on the Bosphorus. In the women’s fleet, Vaina Picot dominated, winning all four races, while Italy’s Francesco Cappuzzo led the men’s division with two victories and a second-place finish.
Defending champion Mathis Ghio began his title defence with a win in the opening race. However, he faced a setback with a spectacular crash in the second race but managed to finish the day in third place overall. His compatriot Alessandro Jose Tomasi is closely following, just three points behind.
The competition features almost 100 entrants from five continents, competing for both men’s and women’s world titles over five days, culminating in Saturday’s Medal Series. Ghio’s impressive opening performance has set the stage for an exciting contest.
Picot, only 16 years old and recently crowned the Youth World Champion in Switzerland, has immediately placed defending champion Maddalena Spanu under pressure. Spanu, who won the women’s title last year, expressed concern over the unpredictable conditions in Istanbul, which could affect her chances.
Cappuzzo’s strong performance in the men’s category is noteworthy, as he finished the day with a total of two wins and a second, showcasing his ability to navigate the challenging conditions on the Bosphorus. The racing was particularly difficult due to gusty winds and a strong current.
The Turkish team boasts the largest representation at the championship with nine men and seven women competing. As the championship progresses with three more days of qualifying, the top nine women will advance directly to the Medal Series, while the men will compete through qualifying fleets before moving to the Gold Fleet competition.
The Formula Wing racing format emphasises equal opportunity, with each competitor permitted the same equipment specifications, ensuring that racing skill is the primary determinant of success. The event is sponsored by Škoda, marking their debut in sailing events in Turkey.
