Melbourne delivered perfect conditions for the final day of the 34th Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta (AWKR) on Port Phillip, with ample breeze and sunshine allowing for three races to be held. This culminated in an exciting conclusion to the event, especially after the light conditions of the previous two days.
In Division 1, Ciara Earley’s Jutson 950, Jacobina, clinched the title with a victory in Race 3. Jacobina won four out of five races, securing the Gai Clough Memorial Trophy. Robyn Ragauskas’ Bull 9000, Bullet, came in second on countback, while Katie Holroyd’s Adams 10, Serious Yahoo, finished third, just one point behind the leaders.
Earley expressed her excitement, stating, “Oh my God, that is super cool. I’ve done over ten – three of them on Jacobina – and never won.” She praised her crew, remarking that it was their first time sailing together, and highlighted the fun and camaraderie of the regatta.
In Division 2, Michelle de Blaquiere with her J24, Gridlock, took the title on countback against Holly Farmer’s S80, Revolution. Janette Syme’s J24, Jet, finished third. De Blaquiere praised her crew, mentioning their experience and teamwork, while also reflecting on the enjoyable atmosphere of the event.
Farmer, who returned from New Zealand, noted that the day’s conditions improved significantly, with more breeze allowing for better racing. She emphasised the fun and social aspect of the regatta, which keeps women engaged in sailing.
The regatta commenced with a chilly morning, but quickly warmed up as the breeze picked up. Race Officer Laura Hughson successfully initiated races on time, a welcome change after two days of light winds. A fleet of 36 boats raced down Port Phillip, showcasing a vibrant sailing community.
Overall, five races were completed over the three-day King’s Birthday weekend, marking a successful event. The prize-giving ceremony included various awards, such as the Rohan Brownlee Leadership and Endeavour Award, which went to Sue Burke, and the Novice Helm Award, awarded to Kym Jenkins. The Best Performed Owner/Skipper title was also won by Ciara Earley.
Monica Jones, co-chair of the AWKR, expressed her delight at the participation and engagement of sailors, emphasising the event’s welcoming environment and the legacy of Gai Clough, who initiated the regatta 36 years ago.
