A million dollar yacht for less than $200,000

Yachts and dreams are synonymous, but yacht ownership is sometimes likened to standing under a shower tearing up $100 dollar bills; unless you share the capital and running costs with others. Fractional ownership of yachts is common on Australia's weekend waterways but only recently has it become possible to syndicate the ownership and management of a yacht in the cruising grounds of the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

Fractional ownership enables people with the desire, time and resources to spend extended periods cruising idyllic waterways, exploring new countries, cultures and histories – living the dream without the enormous responsibility and cost of sole yacht ownership.

Here is a live example, a brand new yacht to be based in the Eastern Mediterranean that was delivered in September a 2016 Hanse 575 Owners Version. The 57ft yacht is a Hanse built sloop. Hanse the German builder has dispensed with dated maritime design so James Cook would definitely be out of place here. The three cabin layout with an owner's suite forward features contemporary architecture. The boat comes comprehensively equipped and includes top quality linen. All three cabins and the saloon are fully air conditioned and the outdoor living pace is second to none. The fit out includes a washing machine/dryer and the galley is equipped to satisfy the most demanding gourmet chef.

A one sixth share in this yacht costs EURO114,100 and the out-of-pocket running costs over a three year syndicate term will amount to about AUD$12,000 per year. The fact that the yacht will only be used by owners means the depreciation across the three years will be less than with a charter yacht. That figure also includes a management fee charged by Sydney Company, Yacht Share Mediterranean Global (YSMGlobal) who look after the finances, manage the usage and coordinate the operational aspects of running the yacht. YSMGlobal's owners have over 30 years' experience in the Mediterranean boating holiday business and a long standing connection with world leader Dream Yacht Charter, whose base facilities will be used in the Caribbean and selected Mediterranean locations.

YSMGlobal's management of the yacht means the finer details are accounted for. An owner and his guests will arrive at their desired holiday destination where the yacht is prepared and waiting, untie the lines and sail off into the sunset with the pre-provisioning having been done before the arrival. If a skipper is needed that can be arranged and if the yacht is required at another location it will be delivered there. Access to extensive local knowledge in the planning of a cruise is also available as part of the YSMGlobal package.

As the boat is owned privately there are no restrictions on where it can go and if there is a technical problem along the way because it's part of the YSMGlobal family there is always someone on hand to assist.

So the dream and the reality can come together; YSMGlobal find the other partners.
