Marine Rescue Iluka Yamba has made history, with Marg Deguara becoming the unit’s first female Coxswain after successfully completing her operational assessment. With 19 years of volunteer service, Marg’s achievement marks a significant milestone in her long association with marine rescue and lifelong passion for the water.
Unit Commander John Bosward expressed pride in Marg’s accomplishment, stating, “Marg is an incredible individual and we and the local boating community are privileged to have such a skilled and dedicated volunteer serving the community. Earning her Coxswain rating is a fantastic personal milestone and a wonderful achievement.”
Marg began her volunteer journey with the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard at Yamba in 2003 and has held various roles, including National Captain Training. Initially, she was hesitant to pursue the Coxswain path, but over time, she evolved into the position. After returning to Yamba in 2018, she progressed through the ranks, achieving her Coxswain Restricted rating in June 2023, which allowed her to skipper the rescue vessel on enclosed waters. Her recent qualification now permits her to command the vessel and crew on offshore operations.
Marg acknowledged the responsibility that comes with her new role and expressed gratitude for the support she received throughout her journey. Her passion for the water began in childhood, and she hopes her achievement will inspire more women to join the Service and pursue operational leadership roles.
She stated, “It takes time and hard work, and I encourage women to take the first step and begin volunteering with Marine Rescue NSW. The training is comprehensive, free, and it feels good knowing you’ve played a role in assisting people stranded at sea or saving a life.”
