All of the world’s eight giant 32-metre long Ultim-class trimarans will gather for the classic ocean sprint, the Route du Rhum Destination Guadeloupe, starting this Sunday off Saint-Malo. Defending champion Charles Caudrelier returns with a revolutionary new boat, Gitana 18, which is still in its early development phase. His competitors include Armel Le Cléac’h with Maxi Banque Populaire XI and Thomas Coville with Sodebo Ultim 3, both of whom rely on proven designs. Anthony Marchand takes the helm of Actual Ultim 4, the boat that won in 2022, while Tom Laperche with SVR-Lazartigue presents a strong challenge to his more experienced rivals. Guirec Soudée, Alexia Barrier, and Louis Burton also join the line-up, each bringing their own unique experiences and uncertainties to the race.
The new Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, skippered by Caudrelier, introduces a steep learning curve due to its complex design, featuring Y-shaped foils designed for continuous flight. This race marks its first major test after extensive training and testing. Caudrelier acknowledges the challenges ahead but remains optimistic about the boat’s potential.
Tom Laperche expressed intrigue about the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, noting it could represent a significant advancement in trimaran technology. The anticipation surrounding Caudrelier’s new vessel adds an exciting layer to the upcoming race.
Among the ambitious competitors is young Tom Laperche, who is eager to make his mark in the race. Meanwhile, Armel Le Cléac’h is determined to secure a title that has eluded him despite his impressive track record. Thomas Coville, fresh from a record-setting performance, returns for his eighth attempt, keen to reclaim top honours.
Anthony Marchand, having recently won the 24H Ultim, is confident in the capabilities of Actual Ultim 4, which has proven potential. He aims for a podium finish while also managing the intense demands of the race.
Louis Burton, transitioning from monohulls, embraces the challenge of racing his trimaran, which, while not the latest model, has a successful history. He focuses on learning from his experienced competitors while aiming for a strong finish in his first Ultim race.
Guirec Soudée, having recently completed a solo round-the-world journey, approaches the Route du Rhum with a new mindset, ready to push his boat to its limits.
Alexia Barrier, the first woman to compete in the Ultim class for this race, is excited to return with new experience and a prestigious boat, eager to live up to its legacy without the pressure of expectations.
The Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe promises to be a thrilling spectacle as all eight Ultim-class trimarans set sail, each with their own stories, challenges, and ambitions.
