The Boating Industry Association announced Lachlan Fraser of Onboard Marine Services as the BIA Apprentice of the Year for 2026. Located at The Spit, Sydney, Fraser has shown exceptional commitment during his apprenticeship.
BIA CEO Andrew Fielding noted that while completing his apprenticeship, Fraser undertook further training with leading engine brands, including Volvo Penta, Mercury, and MAN, and recently became a qualified surveyor. His employers expressed their satisfaction with his dedication to learning and contributing positively to their business.
As the BIA Apprentice of the Year, Lachlan will receive a return trip for two to Hobart, sponsored by the BIA, to attend the 2027 Australian Wooden Boat Festival. He also won the NSW Apprentice of the Year and received a special prize sponsored by BIA Marine Jobs valued at $1000.
Fielding stated that Marine Jobs is a key priority for the BIA across all states and territories. Each state winner also received a certificate, trophy, and $500 tool vouchers from BIA Partner Repco Commercial.
The Queensland Apprentice of the Year award went to Teresa Gorey, a Marine Mechanic at Sugar City Marine in Mackay. Fielding praised her enthusiasm for the boating industry, highlighting her passion for marine technology and professionalism.
Gorey also received a special prize from the Queensland Recreational Boating Council, valued at $1000.
The South Australian Apprentice of the Year award was given to Liam Gambell, a Shipwright at Matrix Boats in Adelaide. Gambell was recognised for his strong work ethic and natural aptitude for the marine manufacturing industry.
