As sailing’s fastest league commits to bigger fleets, the sport’s deepest talent pool is stocked with the next generation of drivers from Gdynia to Medemblik to a training base outside Mumbai.
On a windy weekend in Portsmouth last month, SailGP implemented a split fleet format for the second time, allowing for safer and more efficient racing. By dividing the teams into two groups, SailGP maximised the number of boats on the water and reduced downtime between races. This change is intended to remain in place as the league expands further.
SailGP CEO Russell Coutts mentioned that the league is eyeing a future of eight teams in each fleet, leading to a total of sixteen boats racing simultaneously. Currently, SailGP is contracted for fourteen national teams, with room for more teams to be added. The need for additional competitive nations has become a clear priority.
Selecting new nations for expansion involves assessing their depth in sailing talent. With the 49er and 49erFX classes serving as critical proving grounds, countries like Poland, the Netherlands, and China are emerging as strong candidates. Poland, for example, has demonstrated consistent performance on the world stage, with multiple sailors achieving top rankings in recent competitions. The Netherlands boasts a history of success in both the 49er and 49erFX classes, while China’s dedication to developing its sailing programs has begun to show promising results.
Other nations, such as Austria and Norway, are also making strides in skiff racing, with teams producing consistent results across generations. Meanwhile, Uruguay and Argentina are collaborating to leverage their regional strengths in racing to enhance their competitiveness in SailGP.
India, although currently less established, represents a long-term investment opportunity, with a growing interest in sailing and a young program that has begun to achieve results.
The 49er class has become a breeding ground for talent, with many successful SailGP sailors having roots in skiff racing. The similarities in racing styles between the 49er and SailGP boats contribute to the seamless transition of skills from one class to another, allowing for high levels of competitiveness.
