World Champions crowned in the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 fleets

Italy topped the 49er and Nacra 17 fleets, while Poland secured the 49erFX title with a race to spare during the 2026 Junior World Championship in Medemblik, Netherlands. The final day of racing featured intense competition, including three close finishes that highlighted the skill and determination of the sailors.

In the 49er gold fleet, a match race ensued between Italy’s Lorenzo Pezzilli and Tobia Torroni and Germany’s Kjell Haschen and Iven Anton Fromm. The day began with both teams tied, leading to high tension as they navigated through the races. In the second race, both boats capsized due to close sailing, affecting their overall scores. Ultimately, Pezzilli and Torroni maintained their composure to clinch the championship by a narrow margin of three points.

The 49erFX title was decided early when Poland’s Ewa Lewandowska and Anna Zwara secured two consecutive wins, making their championship victory undeniable. However, their final race ended prematurely when a pin broke on their rigging. Despite this, they celebrated their title without the pressure of the last race. Their compatriots, Klara Sobczak and Magdalena Skórnóg, finished second in the overall standings, marking a significant achievement for Polish sailing.

In the Nacra 17 fleet, Italy’s Federico Figlia di Granara and Caterina Sedmak showcased their dominance throughout the regatta, securing their title with a race to spare. The final races were marked by challenging weather conditions, but their consistent performance ensured they finished ahead of their competitors, including Italy’s Arto Hirsch and Sofia Borgia, who took second place, while Switzerland’s Andrea Aschieri and Tine Rossel finished third.

Despite challenging conditions, the silver fleet managed only one race on the final day due to strong winds and capsizes, forcing the race committee to conclude the week’s racing early. In the FX Open fleet, Switzerland’s Henri Rothacher and Noah Strempfer maintained their lead from the start to finish in first place, with the United States’ Samantha Gardner and Noah Nyenhuis securing second and fellow Swiss crew Jacob Ryu Bruendler and Thierry Stucki rounding out the podium.
