The 57th Semaine Olympique Française is currently underway in Hyères, France, where Italian teams have shown impressive performances in the opening days. Following a successful Monday, which was characterised by ideal sailing conditions, Tuesday’s racing offered a different experience with shifting winds and plenty of challenges ahead.
The day’s sailing was marked as a true test of skill under bright skies and winds between 8-12 knots, shifting as the day progressed. Eve McMahon from Ireland highlighted the difficulty faced by competitors, noting that the subtle wind shifts required meticulous observation and strategy: “It was definitely a game of inches for sure. It was hard to know which side would pay, and with the sun right on our racecourse, it was so hard to see which side. The pressure was on.”
The standout performers continue to be the Italian teams. Giacomo Ferrari and Alessandra Dubbini lead the 470 class after a strong showing, attributing their success to their comfort with similar sailing conditions back home. “Because it was in Italian conditions!” they remarked, looking forward to the changing weather expected to come as the event progresses.
As the event shifts from the preliminary phase to eliminations, the stakes become higher, with significantly stronger winds expected on Wednesday. Sailors are preparing for a competitive elimination phase running from Wednesday to Friday, followed by medal races for the top competitors on Saturday.
In the 470 category, racers from Italy have been particularly dominant, with the pair of Ferrari and Dubbini maintaining consistency and taking the lead in the overall standings. Competitors like Jordi Xammar Hernández and Marta Cardona Alcántara from Spain are also notable, now sitting in third place.
Meanwhile, in the iQFoil classes, China’s Zheng Yan leads the women’s division despite having discards from previous races, while Italy’s Nicolo Renna tops the men’s leaderboard. The competition remains vigorous, with several sailors pushing hard towards the podium.
Among the solo dinghies, the Ilca 6 series saw a shift in leadership, with the Netherlands’ Maxime van de Werken-Jonker now leading. In the Ilca 7, Britain’s Michael Beckett remains on top, with Australia’s Matt Wearn closely following.
Overall, the event continues to provide a thrilling platform for the world’s best sailors, testing their skills against dynamic conditions and fierce competition. The next couple of days will be crucial as the weather changes, setting the stage for an intense elimination round as sailors step up their game towards the closing races of the week.
