Two J Class yachts, the Swedish-flagged Svea and Rainbow, are set to race at the 30th anniversary of the Superyacht Cup Palma Richard Mille in late June. This event marks Rainbow’s debut in her new owner’s colours.
The crews of both yachts maintain a camaraderie off the water and will team up in June for the Royal Ocean Racing Club at the Sardinia Cup, sailing under the banners of the Swedish Ran 41 footer and Jolt 52. Before competing in Palma, they anticipate informal racing together for practice. However, once the competition begins, both teams will aim for victory, especially against Svea, which has achieved remarkable success in J Class racing in previous years.
Svea recently bagged three consecutive Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup titles from 2022 to 2024 and clinched victory at the J Class Barcelona Regatta in 2024. In contrast, Rainbow’s participation in the Superyacht Cup will be its first competitive outing under the command of Admiral’s Cup winner Peter Harrison, who is also the CEO of Richard Mille EMEA, a partner at this event for the next three years.
Rainbow is considered one of the most agile J Class yachts, proving her speed in the Barcelona races where she competed for the first time since 2014. The conditions in Palma, with light to moderate breezes expected in June, should favour her performance.
Mat Sweetman, Rainbow’s Captain, noted that they are in a busy training phase leading up to the Cup, focusing on team dynamics and vessel performance. He expressed optimism about the team’s potential, emphasising the importance of establishing strong crew coordination.
Svea will be integrating American tactician Tony Rey for this season, who brings valuable J Class experience and familiarity with the Bay of Palma. Rey highlights the thrill of the upcoming races and is eager for the opportunity to compete with the talented team.
Competitors and spectators can look forward to the registration and check-in on Wednesday, 24th June, with racing scheduled from Thursday to Saturday.
