SailGP ‘Twilight racing’ set to light up Sydney Harbour this weekend

The Rolex SailGP Championship makes its return to Sydney this weekend (February 28 – March 1) for the KPMG Sydney Sail Grand Prix, featuring a historic twist with twilight racing. For the first time, racing will take place during the golden hour, offering spectators a spectacular view of the action on one of the world’s most iconic harbours.

As the sun sets and the city skyline begins to glow, 11 out of 13 national teams will compete in identical F50 foiling catamarans, capable of speeds over 100 km/h, on a stadium-style racecourse around Shark Island. Competitors will face shifting breezes and tactical decisions that highlight the skill of the sport’s top athletes.

The competition showcases a significant rivalry in Sydney. Current leaders, the Bonds Flying Roos, and the defending champions, Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team, enter the event tied on points. Last year, the British team achieved victory here, marking a critical point in their title-winning journey. Now, under the leadership of Tom Slingsby and backed by co-owners Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, the Bonds Flying Roos are eager to reclaim dominance after a recent win in Auckland.

Sydney Harbour presents both beauty and challenge, with its unpredictable winds influenced by cliffs, headlands, and urban surroundings. This unique racetrack tests sailors’ abilities as they navigate short, steep harbour chop and make rapid tactical choices. Forecasts for Saturday predict gusts of 18-28 km/h, while stronger easterlies on Sunday could increase race speeds.

This weekend’s competition is marked by emerging contenders such as Sweden and a resurgent United States, which may disrupt established teams. However, New Zealand and France are not competing due to damage sustained in Auckland.

Twilight racing introduces a new chapter for SailGP, where participants must adapt to changing light and environmental conditions. The picturesque setting is expected to attract viewers, fostering an electric atmosphere for fans, particularly those on Shark Island who will have access to exclusive viewing experiences.

For comprehensive updates, races will be broadcasted across major territories including the UK (TNT Sports), France (Canal+), Germany (ZDF), and Australia (Fox Sports, SBS). The event promises an exciting spectacle as the teams vie for supremacy in the golden hour.

With high stakes and a thrilling environment, the KPMG Sydney Sail Grand Prix is set to be an unforgettable moment in the Rolex SailGP Championship.
