SailGP announced that the ROCKWOOL Racing SailGP Team has been acquired by leading sports investor and American Magic Co-Founder, Doug DeVos. This transaction marks a significant chapter for the Danish team within the global sail racing championship, bringing together leaders from business and high-performance sport with a shared ambition to enhance on-water performance and develop the next generation of racing talent.
Sir Russell Coutts, SailGP CEO and co-founder, noted that this announcement signifies a transformative moment for SailGP and the commencement of a new era for ROCKWOOL Racing. He expressed confidence in American Magic’s capabilities to compete at the highest levels, paired with ROCKWOOL’s commitment to sustained performance, innovation, and growth.
The US $60 million acquisition highlighted the increasing value of SailGP teams as the league garners interest from various investors, including high net worth individuals and private equity groups. DeVos underscored that this partnership with SailGP and ROCKWOOL Racing represents a commitment to high performance and provides a clear path towards building a winning team.
American Magic will manage the team, with ROCKWOOL remaining as Title Partner until 2032. This long-standing partner relationship is set to uphold the team’s identity, focus on performance, and support its global marketing aspirations. The ROCKWOOL Racing team aims to maintain its representation of Denmark, adhering to nationality rules by featuring at least three Danish athletes when fully crewed.
Recognised as the ‘Fastest Team on Water,’ ROCKWOOL Racing achieved a record speed of 103.93 km/h at the Germany Sail Grand Prix in Sassnitz during the 2025 season. The team finished seventh overall in 2025 and secured a crucial victory in Abu Dhabi.
Mirella Vitale, Executive Vice President of ROCKWOOL Group, expressed excitement about this new era leading to sustained Danish participation in SailGP. She affirmed confidence that American Magic is the ideal partner to drive the team towards its ambitious goals. Vitale also highlighted that the partnership allows ROCKWOOL to engage in global marketing activation while benefiting from American Magic’s operational excellence.
The team, guided by Danish driver Nicolai Sehested, will be integrated into American Magic’s performance ecosystem, concentrating on elite performance and talent development. Earlier in the year, SailGP established a long-term training base at the American Magic Performance and Innovation Center in Pensacola, Florida.
Mike Cazer, CEO of American Magic, remarked that the acquisition is transforming the project from a passion-driven initiative into a strategic investment within the fast-expanding sport. He aims to enhance the high-performance platform of ROCKWOOL Racing, ensuring competitive participation and adding value to SailGP and its title sponsor.
The Rolex SailGP Championship will resume this weekend with the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Auckland (February 14-15, 2026). For ticket information, visit SailGP.com/Auckland.
