GLOBE40 2025/2026 – January 28, 2026
The first “pointu” arrived just 5 days and 11 hours after the first “scow”. Four competitors arrived within 4 hours after covering 7,000 miles.
Arriving in Valparaiso during the golden age of sail was a privilege not granted to all clippers from Europe; many of them now lie scattered across charts in the vicinity of Cape Horn as wrecks. The fleet of classic Class40s, known as “pointus,” completed a transpacific crossing under notably challenging conditions. They will have to wait until leg 5 to Recife to round Cape Horn. The Brazilian boat BARCO BRASIL, the Austrian-British crew WILSON, the British team JANGADA RACING, and the Canadian team WHISKEY JACK arrived on January 28th within a few hours of each other, marking a remarkable competitive finish.
The seven Class40s departed from Sydney on January 1st. Following technical difficulties, the German team NEXT GENERATION had to return to Reunion Island, while FREE DOM faced mishaps that led to two returns to port before its third departure on January 17th. The remaining competitors faced a tough adventure in the Southern Ocean, recording high speeds and navigating the challenging waters.
BARCO BRASIL consolidated its position at the top of the pointus, setting a new average speed record of 10.7 knots across the ocean, closely competing with the new scow record of 13.40 knots established during this race. WILSON continues to impress with its consistent performance under the guidance of skipper Lisa Berger, who has gained significant social media attention for her updates. The JANGADA RACING team made wise decisions during adverse weather, while WHISKEY JACK improved steadily throughout the race.
The arrival times for the competitors on January 28th are as follows:
| BARCO BRASIL | 12.02.13 UTC | 27j 08h 02′ | 7007 | 10.7 |
| WILSON | 15.00.58 UTC | 27j 11h 00′ | 6922 | 10.5 |
| JANGADA RACING | 15.36.15 UTC | 27j 11h 36′ | 6947 | 10.5 |
| WHISKEY JACK | 15.55.13 UTC | 27j 11h 55′ | 7064 | 10.7 |
All competitors deserve respect for their achievements in this tough and competitive environment.
