The first Preliminary Regatta for the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup will be held in Cagliari, Sardinia, from 21-24 May 2026. This event poses unique challenges given the traditionally variable weather patterns in the region during this time, particularly the influence of the Mistral and Scirocco winds, which are expected to create exciting conditions on the Bay of Angels.
Ray Davies, Chief Coach for Emirates Team New Zealand, notes early insights from training sessions there, suggesting that conditions could include a strong NW mistral breeze or a solid thermal breeze, each offering great racing potential. Teams will closely monitor wind data leading up to the event, and insights from Auckland regarding heavier air performance will surely inform strategies.
During the regatta, teams can enter two AC40 yachts, allowing junior and female team members to gain fleet racing experience and prepare for future Youth & Women’s America’s Cup events scheduled for Naples in 2027.
Grant Dalton, CEO of Emirates Team New Zealand, anticipates surprises during the event, stating that there is little difference between established sailors and newcomers, with tremendous young talent emerging as serious competitors.
Besides the Mistral, the Scirocco wind also plays a critical role in Cagliari, often delivering ideal foiling conditions, potentially allowing the AC40s to achieve speeds over 45 knots. Davies expresses hope for such conditions to create a spectacular racing ambiance.
Onshore, fans can expect vibrant engagement opportunities, with Cagliari, home to Luna Rossa supporters creating an exciting atmosphere. A free Race Village will be situated at the port, alongside a public FanZone with large screens for live coverage, allowing spectators to fully engage with the racing action. Leslie Ryan, the America’s Cup Event Director, emphasises the considerable efforts made by local authorities to enhance the event experience, promising a show unlike any previous America’s Cup events.
The event format includes up to ten races throughout the four days, with the top two teams competing in a high-stakes winner-takes-all final. This represents a valuable opportunity for teams to build momentum going into the America’s Cup competitions.
The Road to Naples 2027 officially begins in Cagliari, marking a transition into a new chapter of America’s Cup racing.
