Tilly and Lattanzi take out the Asia Pacifics in Brisbane
The first WASZP event of 2026, the inaugural WASZP Asia Pacific Championship, hosted by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Brisbane from 6 to 10 January, showcased five days of intense competition. Competitors faced a variety of conditions in Waterloo Bay, including strong winds and waves, adding excitement to each day. The event featured two days of windward-leeward racing, followed by a day of Sprint and Distance racing, culminating with another round of up and downs.
In the men’s division, Australia’s Louis Tilly excelled, securing 13 bullets from 17 races. Despite challenging competition, Tilly consistently demonstrated his superiority, having already claimed victory in the Australian summer series. The Kiwi sailors Jasper Camenzind and Ash Cole finished second and third respectively, being the only ones to claim wins against Tilly during the week, particularly showing strength during Sprint races.
In the women’s competition, Pearl Lattanzi, recently recognised as a finalist for the US Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year following her success at the WASZP Games in 2025, emerged victorious against fellow All-Stars Bridget Conrad and Grace Poole. All competitors in the women’s field made a statement with the new 7.5 sail, with Conrad and Poole finishing second and third.
Jervis Tilly, while managing the event, competed in the Super Master division. Although Tilly acknowledged he would no longer match his son on the water, he secured a third place overall, confirming his skills against the younger competitors.
Tilly commented on a highlight of the competition: “The Sprint and Distance day was out of this world. Every sailor was beaming from ear to ear, and my average speed was phenomenal. We were just ripping!”.
The Asia Pacific Championships set the stage for a promising year in WASZP racing, with the next upcoming event being the WASZP Games in Pensacola, preceded by the inaugural All-Stars invitational. For highlights and images from the championship, please check the WASZP socials.
