Paprec Arkéa powers past Biotherm in drag race down the Portuguese coast

Paprec Arkéa has surged ahead in the latest leg of The Ocean Race, racing past Biotherm down the Portuguese coast. Skipper Yoann Richomme and his crew took the lead, arriving in the Gulf of Cádiz this morning, with Biotherm and Holcim-PRB close behind.

After a brief stop in Porto, the IMOCA fleet quickly resumed their journey, with Paprec Arkéa, second into Porto, making an impressive start. Richomme described the restart as “super-fast” with favourable conditions that allowed them to hit speeds of 25 knots. Mariana Lobato from the crew remarked on their swift downwind run, noting the slight advantage they gained by choosing the right side of the course.

Biotherm, which led into Porto, faced challenges as they struggled with downwind comfort. Skipper Paul Meilhat acknowledged that conditions would be tough following Cape St. Vincent after a fast first leg. However, by the time the fleet passed Cascais, Paprec Arkéa had gained momentum, even clocking speeds up to 30 knots as they battled for position.

As the night progressed, Paprec Arkéa maintained a clear lead, nine miles ahead by 11:00 UTC, with Biotherm and Holcim-PRB trailing closely. Holcim’s Alan Roberts expressed optimism about their performance, indicating room for improvement as they continued the race toward Gibraltar.

Meanwhile, at the back of the fleet, Team Amaala faced a significant deficit of 400 miles but remained determined to fight through the challenges. Skipper Alan Roura kept spirits high, humorously noting their camaraderie in lighter winds.

As the frontrunners approach Gibraltar, they are expected to skirt the exclusion zone, aiming to optimize their route. However, the forecast suggests lighter conditions after the strait, possibly allowing the chasing boats to close the gap.
