The 2026 Team Racing World Championship in Stockholm promises to be a landmark event, showcasing both thrilling competition and cutting-edge technology. Set to take place from 12-16 August 2026 on the picturesque waters of Riddarfjärden, the championship will feature 12 national teams vying for glory in a stadium-like setting.
As the countdown begins, teams are gearing up for an exciting mix of camaraderie and intense tactics on the water. The reigning champions from the Corinthian Yacht Club (USA), led by skipper Will Bailey, are returning to defend their title. Despite the challenge of racing in identical J/80 boats, Bailey expresses enthusiasm for the new experience, noting the value of training in a city environment similar to Stockholm.
“Racing in J/80s is new for us, so there’s been a steep learning curve. Being able to train right in the city, on a harbour course similar to Stockholm, has been incredibly valuable,” he remarked. The short, intense races promise excitement for both sailors and spectators, with Bailey encouraging a focus on enjoyment rather than pressure.
In addition to the competitive spirit, technological advancements will enhance the spectator experience. The new platform, ViewRegatta, aims to bridge the gap between the fast-paced action on the water and the spectators on shore. Developed by a team that includes competitive sailor Martin Alsén, this innovative system will utilise smartphones on each boat to provide real-time data, enhancing viewer engagement.
Key features include real-time tactical analysis driven by AI, predictive commentary explaining tactical decisions, and accessible visualisations allowing fans to follow the race closely from their devices. This technological leap aims to make the complexities of team racing more understandable and engaging.
The blend of human skill and smart technology at the 2026 Championship is set to redefine how sailing is experienced, making it accessible for fans both locally and globally. Whether you’re along the quays near City Hall or tuning in from afar, this event seeks to establish new standards in the sailing world.
