Young sailors make their mark at Sail Paradise 2026

They may be among the smallest boats in the fleet, but the Sports Boats are making a big impression at The Yacht Sales Co Sail Paradise 2026, with a new generation of young sailors taking on the Gold Coast alongside significantly larger yachts.

Day Two put the spotlight on the emerging talent within the fleet, with Sports Boats featuring all-youth crews and more than 10 sailors under the age of 21 taking on skippering and crewing roles across the regatta.

The lightweight, high-performance Sports Boats have provided some spectacular moments throughout the weekend, using their speed and agility to race alongside – and at times fly past – much larger yachts.

For their young crews, Sail Paradise provides an opportunity to step up into competitive yacht racing, take on greater responsibility aboard and share the racecourse with experienced sailors and established campaigns.

Young sailors step up

The youth presence extends well beyond the Sports Boat division, with more than 10 sailors under 21 taking on roles throughout the wider Sail Paradise fleet.

Their participation provides valuable experience aboard larger boats and an opportunity to progress through the sailing pathway into competitive yacht racing.

Southport Yacht Club sees creating opportunities for young sailors to progress to this level of competition as an important part of growing the sport.

Another strong day on the Gold Coast

The young crews had good conditions to demonstrate their skills on Day Two, with a 10–15 knot breeze providing another strong day of racing.

The course took competitors along the Gold Coast coastline towards Burleigh before heading back towards Surfers Paradise.

The mix of fast Sports Boats and larger racing yachts, set against the Gold Coast skyline, provided a striking demonstration of the variety of boats and sailors competing at Sail Paradise.

The Australian Yachting Championships also continued as part of the wider regatta, putting some of Australia’s established racing campaigns on the same waters as the young sailors making their way into the sport.

With two all-youth Sports Boat crews and young sailors represented throughout the wider fleet, Sail Paradise 2026 has provided an encouraging glimpse of the next generation coming through.

Racing continues tomorrow for the final day of The Yacht Sales Co Sail Paradise 2026, bringing three days of competition along the Gold Coast coastline to a close.

For the young sailors who have spent the weekend racing alongside – and sometimes flying past – boats many times their size, Sail Paradise has provided valuable experience at the next level of the sport.
