TP52 Australia building pathways as Gold Cup gains momentum

The TP52 Australia fleet recently competed in Act 2 of the Pallas Capital Gold Cup, held in Sydney Harbour, featuring seven competitive races in a classic westerly breeze. Matador maintained its extraordinary form, securing top positions in both IRC and TP Ratings, marking its second consecutive victory in the 2026 series.

Matador navigator Alice Tarnawski noted that the team’s ongoing success signifies more than mere performance; it reflects a growing culture of consistency and improvement within the crew and the fleet as a whole. “Every race we’re trying to get better. We never feel like we’re 100%,” Tarnawski stated. This commitment to continual enhancement has become a hallmark of the TP52 fleet as it develops.

Craig Neil, TP52 Australia President and helmsman of Zen, emphasised that the high calibre of racing is a key driver of growth within the fleet. He observed how a single mistake, like a poor hoist, can result in significant position losses, highlighting the excitement of the close racing. The increase in quality boats and the depth of talent among sailors are cornerstones of the competition’s appeal.

In Australia, the Grand Prix sailing scene is thriving, characterised by strong owner participation and high-quality crews, attracting interest from both local and international teams. Neil expressed gratitude for the strong support from boat owners, citing the high calibre of competitors as a positive sign for the future of the sport.

Mark Spring, representing the Corinthian team Highly Sprung, is proactively fostering the next generation by including youth sailors within the team, enhancing their exposure to competitive sailing. He remarked on the enthusiasm of the younger crew, noting, “They’re so keen and so hungry, and the boat looks better than it ever has.”

The integration of families into the sailing community was evident with Sebastian and Jen Bohm introducing their twins to the team atmosphere aboard Smuggler, reinforcing a legacy of involvement in sailing. The Bohms expressed excitement about their growing crew dynamics and expressed confidence in the team’s preparations for upcoming events.

Overall, the TP52 Australia fleet is crafting a rich tapestry of experiences around competitive sailing, blending youth involvement with experienced mentorship. With two acts remaining in the Pallas Capital Gold Cup series, the competition remains intense. The series not only aims for high performance but cultivates a connected community passionate about keelboat sailing in Australia.

Future races will see the fleet reunited with the Super 40s, further enriching the competitive landscape. For those interested in reliving the recent races, comprehensive highlights are available through video recaps, showcasing the excitement of the competition.
