The Australian Sailing Team’s iQFOiL squad has successfully completed an intensive training camp in Townsville, leveraging the region’s exceptional sailing conditions as they gear up for future competitions, including Brisbane 2032.
Under the guidance of iQFOiL Head Coach Arthur Brett, the squad features notable athletes such as Olympic silver medallist Grae Morris and World Under 19 Champion Rory Meehan, alongside emerging talents from the Australian Sailing Performance Pathway.
Coach Brett highlighted the success of the training, stating, “The training in Townsville for the iQFOiL men’s squad of seven sailors has been going extremely well.” He explained the rationale behind the timing and location of the camp, emphasizing the need for favourable wind conditions for foiling as they prepare for the Under 23 World Championships in Portugal next month.
“North Queensland venues in winter are most likely to service this need, and Townsville has fitted the bill beautifully,” he remarked.
Additionally, the camp serves a strategic purpose as Townsville has been identified as a potential venue for sailing competitions at the Brisbane 2032 Olympics. Brett noted, “Our senior men’s squad is made up of iQFOiLers from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, with a young squad in Western Australia building towards more involvement next year.”
The squad has built a strong camaraderie since the COVID years of 2020 and 2021, enhancing their depth and consistency, with Morris and Meehan now poised for the upcoming competition in Portugal. Their experience is beneficial for the younger athletes, providing exposure to elite-level training and international-standard racing environments, which is crucial for establishing a foundation for future Olympic success.
Reflecting on their time in Townsville, Brett expressed gratitude for the support from local sailing facilities, stating, “We have loved our time in Townsville in the warmth and wind… This is a sailing venue I can recommend for more to explore.” With Townsville serving as a launchpad, the path to Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 is well underway.
