In a N-NE breeze building from 7-12 knots with a flat sea-state, Emirates Team New Zealand took flight in their re-configured AC75, Taihoro, for a five-hour training session on the Waitematā Harbour. The day began with systems checks at 11:00 NZ time, followed by dock-out at 11:30 and concluding at 16:39.
Nathan Outteridge, the skipper of ETNZ, expressed satisfaction with the day, saying, “It was a good commissioning day. We had to be pretty patient all week because the weather’s been a bit windy. But we found a really good day, and it was awesome to be commissioning and then doing laps and pre-starts by the end of it. Today was a bit of a change for Blair Tuke and I, being on the port side. The new team members did a great job, and the boat performed well during our laps.”
Remarkably, history was made as Jo Aleh became the first woman ever to sail onboard an AC75 during this session. This milestone marks a significant moment in women’s yachting, correlating with her pivotal role in promoting the inaugural Women’s America’s Cup in Barcelona in 2024.
The return of Taihoro to the Waitematā marks a significant milestone as it is the first AC75 to sail in the 38th America’s Cup cycle, setting a tone for the team’s relentless development and optimisation efforts ahead.
