Shipwreck to become a tiny house

A shipwreck thrown onto a beach during a storm in the Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand could soon be made into a tiny house.

The Marlborough District Council’s harbour team are finding inventive ways to dispose of forgotten boats to save ratepayers forking out even more on the “growing problem”, which has already cost them $50,000 this year.

Dozens of “derelict” boats are spotted in Marlborough each month, but the harbour team only declares one abandoned if it cannot contact the owner responsible for removing it.

Marlborough habourmaster Luke Grogan said about 10 boats have been hauled from the water and dumped at the ratepayer’s expense since start of the year, but a few have gone on to be reused, some in more novel way than others.
