Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris – 2026 470 World Champions

The 2026 470 World Championship in Enoshima, Japan, concluded with British sailors Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris claiming the World Championship title after two demanding Medal Races on the final day. The silver medal was awarded to the German team, Theresa Löffler and Christopher Hoerr, while the Spanish duo, Jordi Xammar and Marta Cardona, took home bronze.

The Medal Races faced challenging conditions with very light winds. The first race commenced at 9:00 a.m., following equipment checks as all teams prepared to head onto the water. The opening race was won by local competitors Tetsuya Isozaki and Yurie Seki, ensuring they remained in medal contention. Wrigley and Harris secured seventh place, benefitting from their strong performance in prior races to maintain a solid overall standing. Xammar and Cardona finished fifth, and the German team crossed the line in fourth position.

The second race proved to be a decisive sailing “tie-break,” with Wrigley and Harris leading from the start, clinching victory comfortably while the intense competition for silver and bronze unfolded behind them.

Bettine expressed her disbelief at the achievement, highlighting the significance of winning in Enoshima, a venue recently associated with the Tokyo Games. She praised her partner, coach, and teammates for their support throughout the competition. Martin acknowledged the week’s challenges, noting the risk of a poor race and the pressure they faced.

The German pair faced a penalty at the start, which required them to take calculated risks to recover. Their strong performance on the second lap propelled them into contention for silver, ultimately securing their medal as the Spanish and Japanese teams struggled to keep pace.

Defending champions Xammar and Cardona managed to secure bronze, with Xammar achieving a remarkable record of eight consecutive World Championship podium finishes from 2018 to 2026.

During the Closing Ceremony, the 470 Japan Association honoured the top-performing nations, with Wrigley and Harris, alongside fellow British competitors Hannah Bristow and James Taylor, receiving recognition for their impressive outcomes. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of the David Barnes Trophy to Wrigley and Harris, acknowledging their exceptional performance throughout the championship.
