Ideal conditions on penultimate day of Laser Europeans

It is the penultimate day of races here at La Rochelle, France and nice wind allowed all sailors competing at the 2018 Laser Senior European Championships to complete the two scheduled races, with 10 now put to bed.

Australia’s Matthew Wearn (2-1-1-1-1-1-12-3-8-7) is still on top of the Laser Standard fleet with 23 points, followed now by European leader Pavlos Kontides CYP (3-1-BFD-5-3-2-3-7-19-3) with 27. Third place overall for Sam Meech NZL (1-1-1-1-2-4-15-1-17-8) with 30.

Philipp Buhl GER (4-3-2-4-BFD-1-13-5-1BFD) is second European and fourth overall with 33 points. Third European place and fifth overall for Michael Beckett GBR (1-5-3-5-12-4-10-11-6-2) with 36.

Nik Pletikos SLO (4-3-1-8-1-4-3-2-2-1) is comfortably leading now the Laser Radial Men’s with 17 points, followed by Federico Tocchi ITA (3-9-4-3-3-1-2-9-416) with 29. Just one point behind is Aleksander Arian POL (7-12-2-1-4-3-7-5-128) on third place on 30 points.

Pandelis Kyrpoglou GRE took the U21 fleet leadership with 73 points. He’s 6th overall and followed 15 points behind by Ben Elvin GBR with 88. Third provisional U21 place for Alexandre Kowalski POL with 90.

A great day for 2016 Olympic gold medallist, Marit Bouwmeester NED (3-9-1-3-1-2-5-7-1-2). She has strengthened her first place overall before the last day of competition. She’s leading the Radial Women’s with 18 points, followed now by Paige Railey USA (1-7-11-4-2-1-13-1-8-5) with 29. Third place overall and second European is Maxime Jonker NED (1-1-1-8-1-1-14-11-13-1) on 30 points. Emma Plasschaert BEL (16-3-5-2-2-2-30-15-11-20) is now third European sailor with 60 points.

Only two races remain to determine the winners, but Marit Bouwmeester is looking unassailable for the Women’s title.
