How Brazil beat the fleet for the first time to pick up debut race win in New York

By Miranda Blazeby @ SailGP

Data provided by the 12-strong F50 fleet has revealed how Mubadala Brazil rose to the top of the fleet to secure its first race win in New York.

Martine Grael’s Brazilian team made history in New York, taking the win in the fourth fleet race and stringing together five consistent races to come within touching distance of the Final for the first time.

Data provided by the fleet shows this was no accident, with the team topping numerous key racing metrics – notably picking up a perfect 100% fly time, sailing the shortest distance and performing the fewest amount of maneuvers.

The team’s win can be traced back to the start, when Grael’s team was positioned closest to the start line as well as being the quickest to cross the line after the gun alongside Spain.

Just 0.5 seconds elapsed between the gun and Mubadala Brazil blasting over the line thanks to the team being positioned just 7.5m away.

By contrast, the fleet took an average of 2.6 seconds to cross the line of the gun – with NorthStar taking the longest – 7.5 seconds.

When it came to starting distance, Muabdala Brazil once again crushed the fleet’s average starting distance of 34.5m, while NorthStar Canada came last in this metric and was positioned 88m away.

It was BONDS Flying Roos which made the quickest start according to speed – 71.1 km/h, while Mubadala Brazil had a starting speed slightly below average at 46.1 km/h.

Despite this, it was Spain which led the fleet away to Mark 1. But crucially, the Brazilians gained the inside line and was the first to maneuver away after Mark 1 before choosing the favored side of Mark 2 to get back ahead.

From there, the team prioritized staying in more wind and minimizing maneuvers. In fact the team performed the fewest number of maneuvers of the fleet – just seven compared to Emirates GBR and Switzerland, which performed the most – 10.

Getting in front of the pack allowed the Brazilians to execute three crucial overtakes from Mark 1 to the finish to take the lead from Spain and stay out in front – crossing the line a full 16 seconds ahead of Diego Botin’s team.
