Glenn Ashby is set to join the DS Automobiles SailGP Team France as wing trimmer from the Rio Sail Grand Prix, replacing Leigh McMillan who is recovering from a shoulder injury.
The absence of McMillan is a significant loss for the French team mid-season. In response, Team France has acted quickly to secure Ashby, regarded as one of the most experienced sailors in the sport.
Ashby, a 17-time world champion and Olympic medallist, is known for his exceptional performance. He has also achieved speeds of up to 222 km/h aboard the futuristic land yacht Horonku.
Having been active within SailGP in recent events, Ashby is well-acquainted with the league’s demands. His previous experience with the French team is expected to aid in a swift integration.
The addition of Ashby comes as Team France builds momentum in the 2026 season, consistently racing at the front of the fleet. Team Manager Philippe Presti expressed confidence in Ashby, stating, “It’s a big challenge for the team to be without Leigh. We wanted someone with the same level of experience and expertise, and Glenn was the obvious choice. We’ve known each other for years; he knows the team well, and we’re confident he will have an immediate impact.”
Ashby aims to contribute from the outset, emphasising his desire to quickly integrate and enhance the team’s performance going forward. He acknowledged McMillan’s influence on his career and his hopes for his friend’s recovery.
Currently sitting third equal in the overall standings, the DS Automobiles SailGP Team France heads into the Rio event focused on maintaining their podium prospects, aiming for an immediate return to full competitiveness.
With Ashby aboard, the team will look to leverage his expertise and experience to maximise performance in the upcoming races.
